Sheet Pile Installation

Sheet pile installation is a widely used method in loose soils (such as sand, silt, and soft clay) and in excavations below sea level where stable slopes cannot be achieved, and water seepage must be controlled.

Sheet piles are interlocking steel sections driven into the ground using hydraulic vibratory hammers attached to excavators or cranes. The length of the sheet piles is determined based on soil conditions and structural load calculations. They can be installed as either temporary or permanent structures.

With our experienced team and extensive equipment fleet, LCM ROTA has been successfully carrying out sheet piling works since 1991.

Temporary and Permanent Sheet Piling Applications

Sheet piling systems can be designed as either temporary or permanent solutions. The selection depends on project requirements and ground conditions.

Our expert teams conduct detailed site investigations to determine the most suitable application method. Based on these assessments, the appropriate system is selected and implemented using high-quality materials and qualified personnel.

Sheet Pile Walls

Sheet piles are specially formed steel sections that interlock with each other to create continuous retaining walls. These walls are installed using hydraulic or vibratory hammers and are pressed together to form a watertight barrier.

Sheet pile walls are used for multiple purposes, including:

  • Excavation support
  • Retaining structures
  • Seepage control
  • Coastal and marine protection

The most common application is to provide a safe and stable excavation area.

Advantages of Sheet Piling

Sheet piling offers several advantages compared to other support systems:

  • High resistance to driving stresses
  • Relatively lightweight material
  • Reusability in multiple projects
  • Long service life in both above-water and underwater conditions
  • Adjustable pile lengths through welding or bolting
  • Fast and efficient installation

How Is Sheet Pile Installation Performed?

Sheet pile installation is carried out by placing and driving a series of interlocking steel sections into the ground.

The process is as follows:

  • Required equipment is mobilized to site
  • Sheet piles are positioned according to construction drawings
  • Temporary guides or templates may be installed to ensure alignment
  • Sheet piles are driven using suitable equipment (vibratory hammer or impact hammer)
  • Each sheet pile is interlocked with the adjacent one
  • The process continues until the wall perimeter is completed

To prevent damage during installation, protective caps may be used, especially when impact hammers are applied.

Sheet Piling Performance and Durability

Sheet pile systems are among the most reliable support methods in geotechnical engineering. They provide safe working conditions, particularly in loose soils and underwater environments.

Despite being relatively lightweight, sheet piles offer high durability and long-term performance. They can also be reused, making them both economical and sustainable.

The dimensions and configuration of sheet piles can be adjusted according to project requirements, ensuring flexibility in design and application.

Key Considerations in Sheet Piling

For a successful sheet piling application, the following factors must be evaluated:

  • Soil conditions
  • Groundwater level
  • Load requirements
  • Excavation depth
  • Structural design

Proper planning and execution by experienced teams ensure safe and high-quality results.
